About National School of Drama

The National School of Drama –New Delhi is a theatre training (acting) institute started by Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1959 at Nizamuddin West. In 1975, the Ministry of Culture Government of India take over this institute and thereby it has received autonomous status.  Considering the academic achievements, in 2005, the Government of India granted deemed university status to NSD, but in 2011. it was revoke on the institute’s request. Its present campus location is at Bahawalpur, New Delhi. The famous theatre artist Satu Sen was the first director of NSD. Waman Kendre, a well-known mentor in the theatre profession is the present director of NSD.

The admissions to acting courses in National School of Drama are offering on the basis of entrance exams.

The Purpose of National School of Drama Entrance Exam 2016-2017

For giving the admissions to “Three Year Diploma Course in Dramatic Arts.” (Full-time residential)

What you get if you attended Three-year Diploma Course in Dramatic Arts at NSD?

You will become a Professional in Acting, Stage/Theatre direction, Theater set design and other theatre-related disciplines.

You will get the NSD application form through three ways as shown below. (Please note that NSD entrance exam application form for the year 2016-2017 will be out on or after 10-04-2016. If you visited this page before 10-04-2016 we are recommending you to bookmark this now to access us easily.)

1. Collect NSD Application Form Online

The Candidates can download NSD application form from http://nsd.gov.in/ (Visit website>New Updates>Application Form Download)

Download the application form and send to the NSD address along with a Demand Draft (taken from any national bank) of Rs.150 in favour of “The Director National School of Drama New Delhi” to the NSD address The Dean Academics, National School of Drama (NSD), Bahawalpur House, Bhagwandas Road, New-Delhi-110001 on or before 08-05-2016 (Note: The exact date will update on 10-04-2016. Please wait till then…)

Please Note: Don’t forget to write this ‘Application for Admission 2016-2017’ on the envelope.

2. Collect NSD Application Form by Post (OR)

To receive the application form by post, please write a request letter to The Academic Secession, National School of Drama (NSD), Bahawalpur House, Bhagwandas Road, New-Delhi-110001 with a crossed Demand Draft/Pay order of Rs. 225/- (inclusive of Rs.75/-) in favour of “The Director National School Of Drama New Delhi” on or before 25.04.2016 (Note: The exact date will update on 10-04-2016. Please wait till then…)

3. Collect NSD Application Form from the Campus New Delhi

You can also collect the application fee from the Books Shop working inside of NSD campus at New Delhi by paying the admission (application) fee of Rs. 150 between any dates from 10.04.2016 to   08.05.2016.

Note: You get the application from the NSD campus only in the working hours between 10.00 A.M to 1.00 P.M and 2.00 P.M to 5.00 P.M.

Eligibility/Criteria to get admission at NSD

The eligibility that required for attending the National school of Drama is given as below. Please read this section very carefully.

Educational qualifications Eligibility

  1. Candidates attended and passed graduation in subject from a recognized university in India or abroad are eligible.
  2. Participation in at least theatre productions (Must submit a proof regarding your theatre experience)
  3. Working Knowledge of Hindi and English are mandatory

Age Eligibility

As on 1-07-2016 the minimum age shall be 20 years and the maximum age shall be 30 years

Note: The candidates belonging to the SC/ST category are eligible to apply till at the age of 35

Selection Process

1st Round: The primary selection comprises of an audition or practical test conducted at 6 centers as shown above.

2nd Round: The candidates qualifying in the primary round will have to attend five to six days workshop conducting at the campus in New Delhi. The institute will provide the accommodation on the sharing basis. Finalists’ names will be declared on the official website of NSD after a few days of 2nd round selection process.

Out of 26 Total seats, 5 seats are reserved for SC/ST, 7 seats are reserved for OBC candidates and physically disabled, and 1-2 seats reserved for foreign candidates.

SC/ST/OBC– Documents offered by an authorized body to support their caste relaxation.

Foreign Candidates: Submit applications through Indian Embassy/High Commission in their countries. Such organization will review the application and forward it to the to Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Delhi. (Website: http://www.iccr.gov.in/.)

General Candidates: No Documents required other than mark sheets and its supporting documents.

NSD Entrance Exam Syllabus

I want to join National school of Drama. How to prepare for national School of Drama?- This is your question. Off course, we Frames Education is responsible to clarifying your that doubt.

Here, we are explaining simply the entrance exam syllabus and pattern of National School of Drama. Before that, make sure that your qualifications are enough to attend the National School of Drama entrance exam. Please find it in the above section, in case you missed to read.

Important Point: You are not eligible to attend the NSD exam, if you haven’t experience in theatre acting.

As we earlier said, the selection process will be held in two rounds.

The first round may be a written test OR audition.

In the written test, expect questions from the topics such as Origin and Development of Folk Theatre, Relationship between Rituals and folk theatre, Famous theatre persons in India, History of NSD and famous persons studied from there, folk forms and technology, Origin and Development of Ancient Indian Theatre, Indus Valley civilization Art, importance of street plays, Method acting, Origin and development of Sanskrit theatre, names and History of Sanskrit play writers, overview of amateur theatre, Karnataka Folk theatre forms, Western Theatre, Influence of western culture in Indian drama, Natyashastra, etc.

In the audition, they may ask to perform on the basis of script/idea/concept to let them know your acting skills.

Second Round

The selected candidates in the first round will invite for attending a 4-5 days workshop at NSD campus. You have to attend screenings, participating auditions, attending group discussions, etc. The judges will closely securitize your interest to the acting profession from various activities during that 4-5 days workshop and finalize you if they pleased.

Other Important Details Regarding NSD Course and Entrance Exam

 NSD Fees

Admission fee: Rs. 150

Tuition fee: Rs. 150 per month

Students’ Union membership fee: Rs. 60 per year

Advance fee for make-up kit:Rs. 2000 (adjustable)

Caution money and library fee deposit: Rs. 9000 (Refunded after the acting course completion)

Stationery fee: Rs. 1650

NSD Hostel Fees, Mess and Other Miscellaneous Dues

Hostel rent per seat: Rs. 200 per month

Electricity & water charges: Rs. 100 per month (pay per consumption)

Medical charges: Rs. 100 per month

Mess charges (for every month) – Rs. 1350 per month

NSD Scholarship

The institute will grant a scholarship of Rs. 6000 (Rupees six thousand only) per month to selected candidates.

Note:  Those who wish to get the scholarship grant must execute a bond of Rs. 2,16,000 (RupeesTwo Lakh Sixteen Thousand Only). If he/she decided to discontinue the studies before three years or made to discontinue on disciplinary grounds, then he/she should return all the money paid by NSD for that particular person before the discontinuance.
