Overview Of the Institute and MGR Film and Television Institute Entrance and Admission 2016-2017

MGR Film and Television Institute is one of the oldest films Education and Training Institutes in India. The institute is also known as Adyar Film Institute. It was started in 1945 by the Government of TamilNadu for the purpose of promoting the film education in the state. In the initial times, its campus was located inside of Central Polytechnic. Later, in 1965, it moved into its present campus in the Tharamani area of Chennai.  Since 2006 the institute was known as M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute. Before that it was known in the name Adyar Film Institute. Some film lovers also called the institute as Chennai Film institute and Madras Film Institute.

As like FTII and SRFTI, MGR Film and Television Institute is one of the cheapest-fee charging film schools in India.

Some of the notable alumni of M.G.R film institute are Rajinikanth (Actor), Chiranjeevi (Actor), Mohan Babu (Actor), Sreenivasan (Actor), PC Sreeram (Cinematographer) and R. V. Udayakumar (Filmmaker).

Affiliation: All the diploma courses are approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), while certificates are awarded by Department of Technical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.

For Diploma in Film Technology and TV Production (Cinematography) and Diploma in Film Technology and TV Production (DI) course

A pass in HSE or an equivalent examination with Physics and chemistry (OR)

Vocational Course with Photography as a Special Subject (OR)

Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (OR)

Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering

 

For Diploma in Film Technology and TV Production (Sound Recording and Sound Engineering) course

A pass in HSE or an equivalent examination with Physics and chemistry (OR)

A Vocational course with Radio or TV as special subjects (OR)

Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (OR)

Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering

 

For Diploma in Direction and Screenplay writing and TV Production Course

A degree in any subject from a UGC approved/ equivalent university + Creative aptitude to the Film studies

 

For Diploma in Film Editing and TV Production Course

A pass in HSE from a recognized board of Education (any group)

 

For Diploma in Film Technology (Animation and Visual Effects)

A pass in Fine arts from Government College of Arts and Crafts (OR)

Candidates completed B.Sc in visual communication/Mass Communication/Electronic Media/Animation/Visual Communication/ (OR)

Any diploma courses from MGR Film and Television Institute (Adayar Film Institute)

 

Age Eligibility

The candidates belonging to the category other than SC/ST applying for the courses except Direction and screenplay Writing & Animation and Visual Effects should not exceed 22 years age as on 1st July 2016. For SC/ST candidates, the age limit will be 24 Years.

Total Number of Seats in each Department at MGR Film and Television Institute

There shall be 14 seats in each department. Out of that 1 seat is reserved for the candidates applying from other states (other than Tamil Nadu) and 1 seat  is rescored for the son/daughter of the person working in the Indian Film industry and duly sponsored by The President, South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, Chennai.

Selection Procedure Film studies

The selection Procedure of MGR film and Television institute is much different from the other film institute like FTII and SRFTI. The Admission is based on the all the three factors as shown below.

60% Marks in the qualifying Examination

25% Marks in the Entrance examination.

15% Marks in the Face to Face Interview secession

You are requested to write a review based on a movie. The entrance exam will be held in the C.I.T Campus at Tharamani Chennai.

Selection Procedure Animation Studies

The selection procedure of Animation Filmmaking at MGR Film institute is on the basis of marks weightage as given below.

40% Marks in the qualifying examination

40% marks in the Animation Entrance examination

20% Marks in the face to face interview secession

Syllabus of MGR Film Institute Entrance examination (Animation)

There shall be an aptitude animation/ visual effects or they may ask to create a drawing based on a given theme

Pass percentage required in the Qualifying Examinations (Based on students’ category)

SC/ST candidates- A pass in the qualifying examination

MBC/DT candidates- 40% Marks in the qualifying examination

BC Candidates- 45% marks in the qualifying examination

Open Competition Candidate- 50% in the qualifying examination

Application Fee

The application fee of the candidates belonging to general category will be Rs. 200/- and the application fee of the candidates belonging to SC/ST category will be of Rs. 60/-

The Fee can be payable by means of Demand Draft/Bankers Cheque taken in favour of “The Principal MGR Film and Television Institute-Chennai”

Kindly Note: The payments through cash, Money order and Postal Order will not be accepted.
